Global warming halted its advance and left the ridge that we know as 6th Ave - the highest point in Brooklyn. The glacier left behind a "kettle hole" from which this lake was made. In 1936 it was filled in and today a sports field is on its location. This photo was from a postcard. In the late 1800's a half a million people a year visited it as a tourist attraction. It was second only to Niagara Falls. 478 acres of rolling hills, spectacular sculptures and mausoleums. Over a half million people are buried here. Many are very famous in the history of the United States. The original house built here in 1636 was the first house built in Brooklyn. What time of year was this photo taken? Notice the clotheslines? Italian immigrants were living in the house at the time. A street in downtown Brooklyn is named after the Schermerhorn family. The wife of John Jacob Astor was born here. Title A name given to the resource 4th Ave & 55th St looking north (1914) Description An account of the resource 4th Ave was designed to be a wide street and around 1898 the City planted hundreds of flowers, bushes and trees in the center of the road way. But in 1911 it was all torn out to build a subway. The subway cause the population to grow rapidly. St. Jacobi's Church is on the left, and a horse drawn wagon is on the right. This section of the subway was finished and filled in with soil.
