It is Interstate Highway or 1-278. This portion is on Hamilton Avenue as seen from the Gowanus Canal. In the early 1900's an elevated train ran above 3rd Avenue. In 1940, it was turned into a 4 lane elevated highway. All the buildings on the east side of 3rd Avenue were torn down to make room. Between 1958 and 1964 it was widened to today's 6 lanes.
